Francis Landau (1915-1960) served as the first Shirley Postmaster at the newly opened building in June of 1952. Known for being a tireless civic leader, he headed the Mastic Beach American Legion Post as well as being a member of the Shirley Taxpayers Association. He began his career in the United States Postal Service around 1937. His life came to a tragic end during an automobile accident on the Sunrise Highway extension in October of 1960. The community subsequently named the road which passes by the Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary and William Floyd High School Francis Landau Place in February 1961.
