We’re starting a new programming series called “Vintage Skills for Moden Crafters.” We’ll be examining and creating floor, bed, and wall coverings; food utensils and storage implements; and beautiful artwork such as sherenschnitte (gorgeously detailed paper-cutting brought to the American Colonies by 18th-century German immigrants).
Old-time necessities were often as beautiful as they were useful. Penny rugs, identified by three concentric circles of wool or felt sewn one on top of another, form a geometric design in eye-catching color. Civil War-era pennies, quarter-sized, helped form the smallest circle, hence the name.
Come make your own penny rug with cultural historian Diane Schwindt on Tuesday, June 3rd, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The class will be held at our Moriches Branch, and a nonrefundable fee of $10 will pay for the materials you’ll use to create this historically inspired and brilliantly colored textile.
Registration will open May 27th at 9am. Register here!
