Senior Information Center

Learning is a lifelong experience, and the Community Library is dedicated to meeting the needs and interests of senior citizens in our community.

The Senior Information Center, located on the main floor the Community Library, is your connection to community outreach services, specialty materials, and unique programs.

The Senior Information Center is home to a variety of senior resources including:
  • Informational pamphlets, brochures, and fliers
  • Weekly, monthly, and daily senior related newsletters, newspapers, and publications
  • Community resources
  • Library activities

Retirement Resources Directory

This valuable directory provides comprehensive information on retirement resources and services available to Older Americans.

Senior Advocate

Senior Advocates from the Suffolk County Office of the Aging visit the library monthly to assist with applications for SSI, food stamps, Medicare/Medicaid, senior ID cards, HEAP benefits, IT214 and other vital senior services. Appointments are necessary. Please contact the Community Library at (631) 399-1511, ext. 240 for further information.

Library Services for the Homebound

A free service offered to MMSCL district residents who are unable to visit the library due to a temporary or permanent illness or disability, or for individuals who are frail and elderly and don't have transportation. Materials made available to homebound patrons are large and regular print books, videos (movies or educational), books on cassette or CD, and magazines. Library materials are delivered free of charge. Please call 631-399-1511, ext. 247 to inquire further about this special outreach program.

Long Island Talking Book Library (LITBL)

A free library service for individuals who cannot hold, handle or see well enough to use regular print books. LITBL is a sub-regional library of the National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. LITBL lends professionally recorded books and magazines (and the special equipment needed to play them) to eligible residents on Long Island. Materials are sent to borrowers and returned by postage-free mail. For more information contact Debbi Ward, Senior Outreach Librarian, at 399-1511, ext. 354, or click on the link.

Help for the Visually Impaired

A video magnification system called a Merlin LCD is available for individuals with low vision. The Merlin enables you to enlarge images in seconds; making it easier to view photos, read bills or correspondence. No appointment is necessary to use this equipment. Just stop by the Adult Services Information Desk and a librarian will be able to assist you.

Health Insurance Counseling

A trained counselor from the Suffolk County Office of the Aging is available each month to assist seniors with questions regarding Medicare. This personal service is available by appointment only, please call the Information Desk at 399-1511 ext. 240 for your appointment.

Large Print Collection

The library has a comprehensive collection of both fiction and non-fiction titles, including most new releases. Reader’s Digest and the New York Times are also available in large print format.

Free Blood Pressure Screening

A nurse from the Dominican Sisters Family Health Services is available each month to administer free blood pressure screenings. No appointments are necessary.
