The Community Library is a regional office for  Literacy Suffolk, Inc. Our office facilitates basic reading and English for Speakers of Other Languages tutoring. District residents, who are not enrolled in school, and have difficulty reading, or for whom English is not their native language, may apply for private or small group tutoring through Literacy Suffolk. Inc.

Basic literacy students study reading and writing skills. English for Speakers of Other Languages students are tutored in conversational English and relevant life skills. The office provides support for tutors and their students in the form of books, workbooks, videos, audiocassettes, and computer programs. All volunteer tutors are required to attend a 24-hour training workshop.

The Literacy Office is open Monday - Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you would like to volunteer, or know someone who requires assistance, please call (631) 399-1511, Ext. 215.

  • Learning English: A Family Affair
Expands the English-as-a-Second Language program to include activities for children. While parents improve their English, children are immersed in their own English language activities with a children’s librarian, enjoying stories, games, snacks and crafts. The session ends with the entire family participating together in a circle time, during which their new language skills are put to practice.
